Comparisons between Israel and Taiwan seem to get a very wide variety of comments and I’m well aware this is a controversial issue. People have been asking me what I think of this show, and till yesterday I didn’t get a chance to see it. “New World” is an Israeli TV show from Channel 10 and nana with the wonderful Nitzan Horovitz who tries to envision the new world we’re going into, and the first episode – yeah, you guessed it, is about China with the explosive title “The Chinese Century”. Before the previous elections - when I asked Taiwanese I know down at Tainan DPP land what they were going to vote, most of them were saying “The Taiwanese economy is doing so bad, we need to change to a KMT president”. No, not mine. I’m not a Christian so I’ve never been to a baptism ceremony before, as odd as that may be as someone who lives in the religious center of Christianity - Jerusalem. Through a Taiwanese friend who studies here I visited the Chinese-Taiwanese Christian community again this last Friday to try and know them and learn more of their traditions. It was a while ago that I attended a speech at NCKU given by an American diplomat in Taiwan. The speech title was “An American Diplomat: A Life of Service in the Global Village” as part of an EAGLE lecture series “Envision the World”. It was a very interesting speech, and I was quite impressed with the speaker – his clarity, flow, experience and perspective. As he studied in Taiwan during the KMT rule and now serves as a diplomat in Kaohsiung he’s made a strong point about the impressive change Taiwanese society has gone through from being under martial law to a full democracy.
