Baptism at the Taiwanese-Chinese Christian Community in Jerusalem

No, not mine. I’m not a Christian so I’ve never been to a baptism ceremony before, as odd as that may be as someone who lives in the religious center of Christianity - Jerusalem. Through a Taiwanese friend who studies here I visited the Chinese-Taiwanese Christian community again this last Friday to try and know them and learn more of their traditions. I’ve been to the Chinese-Taiwanese Christian community before, but didn’t have my camera with me. This …

Traditionally Modern : Introducing Israeli culture to the Taiwanese

After the first English corner where I was trying to make the point that Taiwanese and international students should do alot more together, the guy in charge of English corner was pretty excited with that fact that I come from “Jewish culture” which he studied during his university years. He requested that I once again come to speak at English corner to introduce the “long amazing history of Jewish culture” to the Taiwanese, while trying to practice his Yiddish jokes with me even though I don’t know any Yiddish. I thought about …

International tourists and Taiwan : The Israeli perspective

I guess it’s natural that they have it, but it still came as a surprise. A few weeks back I got this next Hebrew brochure by email that details a travel proposal for visiting Taiwan. I was always under the impression that no Israelis ever travel to Taiwan to tour around, keeping track of the travel forums in the Israeli websphere, but it turns out that travel agencies do offer tourism packages, and it’s interesting to read how those are built to attract Israeli tourists. Another quick translation of highlights from Hebrew : Day 1 : Taipei -> …

60 years of Israeli independence celebrated at the Tainan County Holocaust museum

The Tainan County Bao An Holocaust Museum had a ceremony to celebrate Israel’s 60 years of independence. I went there twice before to help them out with their request to learn how to sing some songs in Hebrew. Arriving there I met a large group of volunteering students from the nearby university who were in charge or greeting the incoming guests.   Inside, preparations were at their final stages at the kitchen to acommodate lunch for the very …

Israelis in Taiwan : Shani Weinstein talking on Reshet Bet’s The Israeli Connection

Over a month ago, my father alerted me that Reshet Bet’s Israeli Connection midnight radio show that broadcasts interviews with Israelis all over the world had an interview with an Israeli Chinese language student - Shani Weinstein - who’s living in Taipei to learn more about her life in Taiwan. I visited their website that holds a 24 hours archive and ripped down the interview. I still have difficulties figuring out how to post it here, but I will post a quick translation of the conversation …

Hagigit blog - An Israeli in China - everything that floats

In the past few months I’ve had the pleasure of following a relatively new blog detailing the adventures and thoughts of one Israeli guy in China. Rane’s blog is a must read for any Israeli who’s into Chinese people and culture. It’s a cynical look into the most amusing details of cross-cultural interactions, and every post that I read makes me smile and laugh thinking “damn, that’s SO true, he’s SO right”. Hagigit, written in Hebrew, is one of my favorite reads, and so, as a tribute - I’ll really quickly translate one of the shortest posts to English, one titled “We’re both from the same village” : Chinese is a difficult language - …
