Since I live on the far eastern side of Hong Kong close to Sai Kung, I don’t travel to HK island very often. When I do, it usually isn’t around night time or early morning, so I only very rarely get to see the busy crowded streets of central Hong Kong empty.

During the Jewish holiday of Shavuot I got a chance to see the lively area of SOHO in central wake up during sunrise early morning after staying up the whole night with a few members of the local community. The way down from mid-levels through SOHO towards the MTR was a shocking new view of an area that is usually packed with partying people and noisy bars. It’s a bit difficult to describe the sensation, but perhaps some of the photos will help you see that area in a new light, as I did.

Down the mid-level escalators (which usually go up…)

The only people awake and walking about are the local folks getting ready for another day of hard labour…

It’s ironic that it is those streets during this time of day that attracts me much more than the party scene during evenings and late nights. I think it’s the first time I thought to my self – “wow, this is great, I’d like to live here”.

Talking about ironic… here’s my iron-ic certificate for doing the all-nighter…
