A Taiwanese recently pointed out to me that a local Taiwanese show "The World is So Big" (世界那么大) visited Israel a few times this past year, and I was surprised to see just how many episodes they had on Israel. I recognized the Taiwanese translating to Hebrew and English in the Israel shows to be my dear Taiwanese friend from Israel, who’s now back in Taiwan.
I always find it fascinating seeing Israel and Jerusalem through Taiwanese (/foreign) eyes. Most of those episodes were a bit awkward to me, as I believe Israel doesn’t look as good as I think it could have and that the Israel displayed, especially the Jerusalem displayed, is the more bizarre exotic side of things rather than what Israel is to me.
With that said, I can see the appeal of the strange and different to the Taiwanese tourist, especially when it comes to religion. I’m just hoping the Taiwanese watching can make the difference between the 猶太人 that are Ultra-Orthodox Jews (10% of the population) shown alot in those travel-shows to the average mostly secular Israeli (50-60% of the population) who isn’t there as much.
Anyways, if you’re interested in Israel and speak Chinese, I’m sure you’ll find this interesting.
