A few weeks back, during the Beijing Olympics, I wrote an article for an Israeli finance newspaper Calcalist about the upcoming Taiwanese Kaohsiung World Games 2009. It was published on the 13th of August in both paper (attached here) and the website. The editors titled it “The Taiwan ‘Olympics’”.

Following is the Hebrew article, followed by a very quick English translation :

הטייוואנים משקיעים מיליארדי דולרים בהכנות למשחקי העולם 2009. המשלחת הסינית עדיין לא אישרה את השתתפותה

בעוד עיני העולם נשואות אל בייג’ינג, מארחת המשחקים האולימפיים לשנת 2008, הטייוואנים עסוקים בהכנות לאירוע הגדול ביותר שנערך אי פעם בטייוואן - משחקי העולם 2009.

משחקי העולם נערכים פעם בארבע שנים וכוללים ענפי ספורט מוכרים רבים שאינם אולימפיים, ובהם: סקווש, סקי מים, חיטוב גוף, באולינג, קראטה, סומו ועוד רבים אחרים. התחרויות ייפתחו ב־16 ביולי 2009 בעיר גאושונג שבדרום טייוואן ויימשכו עשרה ימים.

זכייתה של גאושו נג הטייוואנית באירוח משחקי העולם ב־2004 היתה הישג חשוב מאין כמוהו למדינה. טייוואן נאבקת זה שנים על זכות ההצטרפות כחברה

או כצופה לארגונים בינלאומיים דוגמת האומות המאוחדות וארגון הבריאות העולמי, אך נתקלת בחומה עיקשת של סירוב.

הסיבה היא הקמפיין הבינלאומי של סין, שעיקרו מניעת לגיטימציה מטייוואן, ישות שאותה היא מגדירה כ”מחוז מורד”. סין טוענת לבעלות על האי מאז עליית הקומוניסטים לשלטון והעברת טייוואן מידי הכובש היפני הקולוניאליסטי לידי הלאומנים הסינים בראשות צ’יאנג קאי שק עם נסיגתם מסין בסוף שנות הארבעים. זאת בזמן שרבים מתושבי טייוואן - אשר התפתחה במהלך שנות התשעים לדמוקרטיה פורחת - רואים באי־ישות מדינית נפרדת.

הכנות נרחבות בגאושונג

זכייתה של טייוואן באירוע בקנה מידה בינלאומי נותן תקווה לטייוואנים לזכות בהכרה, גם אם סמלית, של העולם במדינתם, אף שרובם אינם מכירים את כל ענפי הספורט בתחרות.

יותר מ־5,000 אתלטים מכ־90 מדינות צפויים להשתתף בתחרויות. אף שהם אינם נהנים מפופולריות כמו האולימפיאדה, במשחקי העולם יצפו 110 מיליון בני אדם והם ימשכו כחצי מיליון מבקרים מ־130 מדינות.

ההכנות בגאושונג לקראת משחקי העולם היו נרחבות, ובדומה למשחקים האולימפיים בבייג’ינג הקצו הטייוואנים תקציבי עתק של מיליארדי דולרים, כדי לחזק את התשתיות, לייפות את העיר ולהכינה למשחקים מתוך שימת דגש מיוחד על הנושא הסביבתי.

אצטדיון ענקי של 55 אלף מקומות המופעל כולו באנרגיות סולריות ירוקות ומתוכנן לספק בתום המשחקים חשמל נקי לעיר נמצא כעת בתהליכי בנייה מתקדמים, בעלות מוערכת של יותר מ־150 מיליון דולר. כ־22 מבנים נוספים המותאמים לענפי הספורט השונים מוקמים ברחבי העיר בעלות של עוד מאות מיליוני דולרים.

בעיר נפתחה גם רכבת תחתית חדשה, בהשקעה של 6 מיליארד דולר. אגמים מלאכותיים שישמשו את משחקי העולם לענפי ספורט המים עוברים כעת ניקוי וטיפוח יסודי. גם נהר האהבה הרחב החוצה את העיר נוקה מהזיהום ונבנה מחדש עם טיילת רחבה משני צדיו בפרויקט שעלותו הסתכמה ביותר מ־200 מיליון דולר ומהווה כיום אטרקציה תיירותית ומקום בילוי פופולרי למקומיים

The English translation :

The Taiwan “Olympics”

The Taiwanese are investing billions of US$ in preparations for the 2009 World Games. The Chinese delegation has yet to confirm participation (Fili - added by the editors)

As the world focuses on Beijing, the host for the 2008 Olympics Games, the Taiwanese are busy preparing for the biggest event ever to take place in Taiwan – the 2009 World Games.

The World Games are held once every four years and include various well-known sports field that aren’t Olympic, like – Squash, Water Ski, Body Building, Bowling, Karate, Sumo, and many others. The games will open at the 16th of July, 2009 at the city of Kaohsiung in southern Taiwan and will proceed for 10 days.

Taiwanese Kaohsiung winning the World Games bid on 2004 was a very important achievement for Taiwan. Taiwan has been fighting for years for the right to join as a member or observer to leading international organization, such as that of the United Nations and the World Health Association, but has been faced by a stubborn “No”.

The reason is China’s international campaign that tries to prevent legitimizing Taiwan, which it defines as a “rebel province”. China has been claiming ownership over the island since the communists rose to power in China and Taiwan was transferred from the colonialist Japanese to the Chinese nationalists led by Chiang Kai-Shek upon their withdrawal from China. This is while many of the Taiwanese citizens – which saw Taiwan rise to a blooming democracy during the 90s – see Taiwan as a separate entity.

Preparations in Kaohsiung

For Taiwan to win such the bid for such a world-class event gives hope for world recognition, even if symbolic, in their sovereignty, even if the Taiwanese aren’t familiar with many of the sports taking place in the event.

Over 5,000 athletes from 90 countries are expected to participate. Even though the World Games don’t enjoy the popularity of the Olympics, over 110 million people are expected to watch the games and it is predicted that over half a million visitors will arrive at Taiwan from ~130 countries.

The preparations for the World Games in Kaohsiung were extensive, and the Taiwanese have invested billions of dollars to strengthen their infrastructure, beautify the city and prepare the city for the games with an emphasis on environmental issues.

A giant stadium of 55 thousand seats, operated solely by green  solar energy and is at the advanced stages of construction, estimated at more than 150 million US$. 22 additional structures are being built across the city at the cost of additional millions of dollars to match the participating games.

The city recently celebrated a new subway public transport system with an investment of over 6 billion US$. Artificial lakes that would serve the water sports in the World Games are now being cleaned. The Love River that crosses Kaohsiung has been cleaned of pollution and rebuilt with a wide boardwalk on both sides in a project costing over 200 million US$ and is now a tourist attraction and a popular hang out place for the locals.

They called the column “The Taiwanese. Fili An/Taipei”. Hopefully, I’ll be able to write more in the future to tell Israelis about this side of the world.
