Israelis in Taiwan : Tomer and Jun with Neon and Sababa Pita Bar
It’s great seeing other Israelis doing well in Taiwan. Warms my heart.
The other night, as I was meeting someone at Tainan’s “Hangout”, I picked the newest issue of +886, the Taipei based life style magazine in both Chinese and English, and noticed something familiar on the cover. I stared at it for a few seconds and then asked “hey, that guy on the cover, we know him, right? I can’t remember where - but I’ve seen this guy somewhere”.
Just when I got home and read the article I realized this was Israeli Tomer and his beautiful Malaysian wife - Jun - the heartwarming love story behind the surprisingly successful Sababa Pita Bar Israeli food enterprise showing up all over Taiwan. As if that isn’t enough, they’re also into music, soon to release their first CD as part of a group called Neon.
Here’s from the Flickr posted photoshoot for +886 :
The last time I wrote about Tomer was when he gave an interview for “What’s up in Taiwan” and now +886 was interviewing his wife to get more of their personal story.
Tomer is an Israeli, and I’m a Malaysian. Due to the religious differences or our countries we are banned from each other’s country. When I was refused a VISA to go back to the states I was devastated and had to find a country that is politically and religiously neutral for us if we wanted to stay together. I speak, read and write in Chinese, so Taiwan was our best choice.
At first they formed a band called Gan Eden, “heaven” in Hebrew, which - later on - turned into Neon. Their CD is coming out soon… go check it out.
