About an hour drive from Tainan to the east is a Tainan County’s Monkey Mountain.

The mountain forest jungle scenery has a lot of temples, big and small, dedicated to different Gods, some with beautiful gigantic Buddha statues.

John was doing field research for me by chit-chatting to the locals about the Chinese Gods, and asking them about the rallies held in Kaohsiung the day before - which I really regret I didn’t go to - about the Taiwanese UN bid.

And then, we found the spot where all the monkeys were at. Lots of monkeys were running around freely, checking each other out for bugs, relaxing or just fooling around.

From the Tainan County guide:

Wushan Macaca Cyclopis (Swinhoe) Conservation Area is located at a 750-meter height mountain area in NanhuaTown, TainanCounty. There are more than hundreds of Macaca Cyclopis (Swinhoe) living here and evolving to a special habitat. For protecting the wild Macaca Cyclopis (Swinhoe), the county government developed one area for tourists with no admission charge. This Conservation Area is at about 500 meters above the sea level and gathering about 40 to 50 Macaca Cyclopis (Swinhoe).

We wrapped things out with a tea-sort-of-blend from this chilled out and friendly Taiwanese guy at the entrance, made from just about everything that’s out there on the mountain. Made my stomach agonize for about an hour after that, till the comforting western dinner at Jerry’s.

My wife is from Tainan. She was wondering the Chinese
    name for this spot.
Enjoy Tainan. The buffet at the Hotel by the train
    station is amazing.
