Touring Tainan County : Cigu Salt Mountain

Snow? in Taiwan? Santa Clause? Mid-summer? well, kind of… welcome to Salt Mountain in Tainan County, a somewhat strange and out-of-place attraction about 30-40 minutes from Tainan where you can find two big white-grey ‘mountains’ made of salt. Although a bit odd, I liked it. Going with John and his family, we had ourselves a quick taste of the Tainanese weekend get-aways.

Here’s what Taiwan has to say about this place:

The salt mountain that looks like a snow mountain from distance was originally the place for Taiwan Salt Corporation to pile salt. No matter when, there are always two high and big mountains there. Artists also call them the north mountain and the south mountain. The salt mountain with a height of almost 4 floors, Taiwan Salt Corporation did not open it for tourists to climb in the past and tourists could only stand at the mountain foot and looked up. Then Taiwan Salt Corporation built many stairs by the mountain so that tourists can climb up along the stairs. You will never experience the huge salt mountain until you climb to the top and look far into the distance.

Ah, yeah, and there’s a salt museum just next to it :

Located next to the Cigu Salt Mountain. As salt-making in Taiwan was to enter the history books in 2002, in order to preserve the salt industry culture, Taiwan Salt Corp. drew plans to build the Taiwan Salt Museum in 1998. The company privatized in 2004, and Tainan County Government took temporary charge of the museum’s operations.

The place is a bit like a theme park, with salt spas, pony rides, lots of locals selling snacks and drinks, bumping boats, slow duck boats, and… lots of salt.
