Touring Kaohsiung and Cijin Island

Last week, some of my Chinese school friends and I spent a day out in Kaohsiung. My teacher grew up in the area and was kind to take us around and show us to some of of the local sites.

Having a local guide show you around makes all the differences. My Austrian friend, who’s been to Kaohsiung before on his own didn’t expect much, but I believe we were both surprised at how much we enjoyed that day.

We started off by visiting my teacher’s old neighborhood, which is about to be torn down and reconstructed as high-raisers (about that in a separate post) and had ourselves a delicious local Hun-Dun (混沌).

Then, we took a lovely cruise from Kaohsiung to Cijin Island on one of the small local fishing boats that was somehow converted into transport, which are trying to compete against the faster and more modern commercial ferries:

We walked around the small Cijin island, had some yummy snacks accompanied by alot of local attention, played some games, and sat down next to the beach for some breeze :

Arriving back at Kaohsiung, we visited a really special graffiti covered fruit-ice place…

We drove around, then relaxed with afternoon tea/coffee at a South-American coffee shop overlooking the coastline, just as the weather started to turn nasty:

Finally, as it started to get dark, we visited the old British consulate and the neighboring fort:

That was a really fun day.
