China : With even more sex, will there also be more Chinese pride?
Last year, with "China : Sex, Pride and a bit about Israel" I mentioned the sensational story of China’s sex-blogger, Chinabounder, being hunted down by the Chinese online mob. Some claimed it was a hoax, Chinabounder went underground, then reappeared with strong criticism of the Chinese government and culture, and the professor who initiated the Chinese chase even published a book about the event. Quite an unbelievable story.
Among the small projects I run, there’s Chinalyst, a community for English language China blogs. I like that site because it really shows the strength of China blogging and it allows people to get to know new China blogs that join in. In the past few weeks a new blog joined the community with almost each of the blog’s posts being extremely popular and making it into the top 10 recently most popular posts every time. The blog name is "Confessions from the Shadows - The Chronicles of 2 Americans Exposing China Though a Lifestyle of Sex, Girls and Memory Loss" and it includes what I consider to be as "Chinabounder 2.0".
It has some very detailed and direct sex tales and sex-culture analysis by foreigners in Shenzhen, China. With post titles like "Hairy Chinese Pussy… Is there a Solution?", "Chinese Girls: Tattoo = Slutty", "Anal Sex Illegal?", "Which are better at sex: Chinese or Chinese American girls?", I could see why this would be a very popular blog, although those test my Chinalyst moderation limits everytime. But, I figured that in a twisted sort of way, this is part of the how foreigners blog about China, as offensive as it might be to some (/most?).
I wonder how long this one will last before the now-famous Chinese professor or any of his colleagues decide to do something about it.

We love chinalyst too.
Just to clear up something, the point of our blog is not to become “Chinabounder 2.0″ or a sex-riddled, (fucking new girls left and right) commentary like Chinabounder was. In fact, we started writing before ever knowing Chinabounder existed.
The only reason why sex is the first topic is because it attracts new readers. (that is especially true for chinalyst’s all time popular content.)
We hope that China Confessions will be given a chance to show its true face from behind the shadows.
You certainly do things different than Chinabounder when it comes to commenting and promoting your blog. I just hope that you’re aware of how sensitive the topics you’re writing about are to the Chinese people and that you’re prepared for how the Chinese people/Chinese government might respond to your content.
well, i’ve read all ur blog…
it does teach me something, and now im more awared of being careful with foreigners in china…
anyway, u guys showing disrespect to chinese women makes the topic not only sensitive, but dirty in some sense. if ur purpose is to attract new readers, i guess when u successfully reach the goal, u may also gain something unexpect from the angry government and chinese folk.
Carrie - I don’t think this is typical of foreigners and I don’t think you should generalize this to others.
I can’t read Chinese blogs very well, but I have a feeling that there are blogs in Chinese of the same nature as there are some in Hebrew about Israel (which I mentioned in the Chinabounder post).
I just wonder - suppose you knew who those guys were, what would you do about it?
Fili,
I know I shouldn’t generalize this to all foreigners in China, and I believe ur a honest one. However, what I experienced was frustrated.
There’s a foreigner teacher in my university, and he had boasted to some male students of how many girls students he had slept with since he came to China. And he control those girls like puppets by hoaxing them. I knew this is true because he’d tried to take advantage of me also, which luckily I escaped. Even teachers write “sex and shanghai” and try to hook up Chinese girls, usually what more can I expect from others?
White skin foreigners are popular in China. Maybe they’re just normal in their countries, but as they become rare here, they have more advantages to get the girls to bed….
In my case, except for protecting protect myself and warning my friends about it, I don’t think there’s much I can do. What do u suggest?

Interesting. I completely understand (you know, up till now I wasn’t sure if you’re male or female
).
I think it is a very complicated situation as in most cases both sides get something out of it. As you said yourself, some Chinese girls are attracted to those foreigners and sometimes even go into those kind of relationships willingly - knowing exactly what to expect. There was that famous case of Muzi Mei, the Chinese sex blogger, who - for the first time - showed a little of the Chinese female perspective in all this.
Moreover, I’ve met quite a few Chinese / Taiwanese/ Vietnamese guys that took pride in the fact that they have 2-5 (yeah, 5!) girlfriends at the same time. It sometimes seemed like they were expecting me to congratulate them on their good fortune, while I was feeling a bit uncomfortable.
What do I suggest? I really don’t know. In Israel I would say this kind of thing isn’t perceived as bad as in China, many - especially around Tel-Aviv - feeling very comfortable with just-sex relationships. But yeah, just take care of yourself…
Either foreigner or Chinese, it could be great and it could be nasty.
Well, I guess u have seen a lot internet people disguising their real genders… however, I’d think weird if I use Carrie as name while I’m a male^^.
I don’t know how it works in western countries, but in Asia, some men would think the more GF the better, basing on the polygamy history. Anyway, I got some female friends who would like to have more than one BF, so in that way they got more money to spend… actually I wonder, how can they manage so much energy and time to maintain so many relationships?
Fili is from Jerusalem, right? I knew some people from Tel-Aviv and they are really more open with sex. I think people act different when they’re under different cultures. Even though now I’m kind of reserve in China, who knows what I’ll be when in US or Tel-Aviv? ^^ anyway I got my own moral standard no matter where I am and whatever happens. Hehe, glad to learn Fili’s a man of principle.
Carrie,
We do sympathize with your unfortunate experience with the white teacher at your school. However, please dont generalize him and the former author(s) of Chinabounder with us. We look down on those people as much as you do.
If you put aside your initial contempt, and your disdain for this “dirty topic”, you’ll discover something different than what you already see.
We are only being honest with what we experience and what happens in our lives. As much as we talk about girls, politics and the stock market, we also talk about everything we’ve written about on this blog. If we’re too honest for your taste, please find another blog outlet.
For the record, i don’t have white skin.
You know, in the context of “sex”, the word “pride” in the subject line can easily be misunderstood…
Heh, that’s what I thought when I first read “Pride & Prejudice” when I was young
Yeah, don’t you think it makes the title a bit more ‘interesting’?
