Tong Hua by Guang Liang (Fairy-tale 童话 by Michael Wong 光良) is an unbelievably popular song among basic Chinese class teachers and students. It was there in all the Chinese schools I attended, and it’s quite obvious why – it’s easy to understand, it’s simple to follow, it’s touching and melodic.

The NCKU Chinese Language school has been holding a KTV Karaoke competition this past week among the Chinese language students. Surprisingly, I knew some of the songs there, but – among others – there was Michael Wong’s Tonghua once again. So, here’s a chance to compare the Chinese language students of the NCKU Chinese Language center in Tainan-Taiwan to the Hebrew University East Asia department in Jerusalem-Israel :

(Honestly, who do you think’s better?)

So, as a tribute to the official number 1 study-Chinese song, here’s the original TongHua video with English translation embedded, followed by the lyrics (thanks to Chinatown):

忘了有多久
wàng le yǒu duō jiǔ
I forgot how long it has been
zài méi tīng dào nǐ
Since the last time I heard you
duì wǒ shuō nǐ zuì ài de gù shì
and I told you your favourite story
wǒ xiǎng lè hěn jiǔ
I thought for a long time
wǒ kāi shǐ huāng le
I started to feel confused
shì bú shì wǒ yòu zuò cuò shén me
If once again it was my mistake
nǐ kū zhe duì wǒ shuō
You told me crying
tóng huà lǐ dōu shì piàn rén de
that all fairytales are a lie
Wǒ bù kě néng shì nǐ de wáng zi
and I can’t be your prince
yé xü3 nǐ bù huì dǒng
But you don’t understand either
cóng nǐ shuō ài wǒ yǐ hòu
that since you told me you loved me
All the stars in my sky were bright
wǒ yuàn biàn chéng tóng huà lǐ
I hope I’ll change this fairytale
nǐ ài de nǎ gè tiān shǐ
your love for that angel
zhāng kāi shuāng shǒu
Extend my hands
biàn chéng chì bǎng shǒu hù nǐ
turning them into wings to protect you
nǐ yào xiāng xìn
You have to believe
xiāng xìn wǒ men huì xiàng tóng huà gù shì lǐ
We can be just like a fairytale
xìng fú hé kuài lè shi jié jú
With happiness and joy in the end
yī qǐ xiě wǒ men de jié jú
We can write together our own happy ending.

Carrie
the ending of 童话 is quite sad...
anyway, i like 光良, he sings good songs.
  • Did she die? I wasn't sure...
    But yeah, it is sad.

Sorry to say this, but some of your translation to english are wrong...
for example for "and I told you your favourite story" according to the Chinese words it should be "you told me your favourite story"
and "I hope I'll change this fairytale" shoud be "I've became the fairytale itself"
isn't that "bian" means "change into" and "li" means "inside"??
  • Like I wrote, it's from the China-town website, but thanks for the feedback.

I thought the point of the song is that the situation is really bad, but we never know the ending, so we shouldn't give up hope. She probably died, but we dont' know.

sorry lanthean, but I think you're translation is wrong too. I speak manderin, and from what I can read, he says "I told you your favorite story", and the other line you said was wrong actually is conjoined with the next line, so altogether it says "I want to turn into the angel you love so much in the fairytale". If you wanted to seperate the two lines, the best translation would be "I want to turn into the fairytale's" and the next line would read "angel that you love so much". Chinese doesn't fit perfectly into English. You can probably trust my translation because I speak fluent manderin. (I'm bilingual.)

Both groups aren't bad at all. I like the second one better since it sounds cool as a group harmony too. Too bad it was kinda cut up. I think the pronounciation of the first vid was off... -___- or it could just be different accents?? I dunno. The second one sounds fine though.

the second course it was together and pretty, though i liked the first one too you could tell they were trying, but Still, second came in first this time.
