Jewish Chinese connections

Danwei announced that this month has been “a record month for Jewish-Chinese stuff in the Western media” mentioning a few interesting stories :

Journey From a Chinese Orphanage to a Jewish Rite of Passage (The New York Times)

Three weeks ago, she stood at the altar of her synagogue on the Upper West Side and gave a speech about it.

Fu Qian, renamed Cecelia Nealon-Shapiro at 3 months, was one of the first Chinese children — most of them girls — taken in by American families after China opened its doors to international adoption in the early 1990s. Now, at 13, she is one of the first to complete the rite of passage into Jewish womanhood known as bat mitzvah.

So Cece is a Chinese girl adopted by a lesbian reform Jewish couple, and now she’s got a new little Chinese baby sister. Watch the video, amazing.

How Xing Xing Became Devorah Leah (The Jewish Press)

Equally amazing is the story of Ilana and Naaman Skolnik’s adopted daughter, 29-year-old Devorah Leah – born in China as Xing Xing.

A savvy business and computer professional, Devorah Leah Shkolnik (she took the name Skolnik but insists on writing it “Shkolnik” because this is the way it is pronounced in Hebrew) is the CEO of Israel-China Ltd., which serves as a bridge between the Israeli and Chinese business communities.

Sold on a Stereotype (The Washington Post) I already mentioned in “The Chinese stereotype for the ‘Jewish way’”.

There was another Chinese-Jewish connection down at the bottom of Danwei’s post with the Google ads (which, I’m afraid, were targeted at me) - meet “Beautiful  Jewish Women for successful smart people” and “Beautiful Chinese girls that seek love, dating and marriage”. After Danwei’s post only thing that’s missing is an ad for a site where you can meet beautiful Jewish Chinese girls. I’m sure China and Israel have never felt closer.

When I visited this page, the google ads engine decided to display the following ad:

    Adopt Chinese Baby
Letter / Package Delivery to China C-E / E-C document translation

The ad doesn’t go so far as to say anything about sending the adoptee to a Talmud Torah, but I think the implication is that Google adsense is nudging me to raise a Jewish Chinese baby.
