Which are the top universities in Taiwan? I’ve been looking into the Taiwanese university world and their recent rankings, trying to figure out how the university system in Taiwan works and ranks internally.

While visiting the Taiwan culture office in London, they gave me an information CD covering all the universities in Taiwan, which I uploaded to the Chinese Gardenhttp://www.chinese-garden.net/public/Study-in-Taiwan.exe (It’s an archived EXE, open the file to a directory and run the executable). It’s worth checking out if you’re interested in detailed information about universities in Taiwan.

Since I already built small comparison charts between the universities and researched a little, might as well share it with you.

According to the Institute of Higher Education of Shanghai Jiaotong University 2006  (World rank ; Asia rank) :

  3. Natl Tsing Hua Univ (301-400 ; 41-63)
  4. Natl Chiao Tung Univ (401-500 ; 64-92)
  5. Natl Yang Ming Univ (401-500 ; 64-92)

According to Times Higher Education Top 200 World Universities (World rank 2006 ; World Rank 2005) [use Bugmenot extension to login, or subscribe]:

  1. National Taiwan University (108 ; 114)

(Yeah, NTU is the only one appearing in the top 200 universities list)

-

So, summing up, according to the world-rankings, NTU is high above all the others, while NCKU and NCTU are probably 2nd-3rd.

If you have any other information about the universities, rankings, or scholarships, please feel free to comment here.

I would like to add one comment- for whatever it is worth- It varies with the majors and departments when it comes to the university ranking.

For example, if we talk about political science, business and humanity studying, National ChungChi university has a major position in Taiwan; regarding pure or computer science, Tsing Hua and Chiao Tung unviersities are on the top, some of the majors are even better than those in National Taiwan University.

This is my personal humble opinion :)

Wow very informative site. I have been struggling over 5 months as to which university to do my MBA in Taiwan. I have been accepted to NTU but its quite expensive so i have not decided. I have Yuan Ze and NCKU as two other options. Which one do u think is best?

  15. fiLi - Gravatar

    fiLi  |  June 1st, 2008 at 5:59 pm #

Marlyn – NTU is considered by most to be the top university in Taiwan and there’s a good reason for that. Expensive as it may be, I think it would be worth it. I’ve heard good things about their Global MBA program, and they offer a few scholarships that you can apply to as well.

Yuan Ze I don’t know very well, I’m afraid. I study with NCKU. There are advantages and disadvantages to studying with the program here and it depends what you’re looking for. If you have more specific question – I’ll be happy to help out. I strongly recommend visiting http://WWW.INCKU.COM and reading up on the information.

Thanks Fili. What would you say are the advantages of doing the IMBA at NCKU. I have also been accepted to NCKU.I want an MBA but want to concentrate in Finance, and i also want internship opportunities. Thats the hardest decision i have had to make in my life. Any advice?

  17. fiLi - Gravatar

    fiLi  |  June 3rd, 2008 at 9:49 am #

Marlyn – I’m the wrong person to ask. I’d suggest coming down here to Tainan while semester is still running and attend a few classes, talk to some of the students 1on1. I suggest you do the same with NTU, NCCU etc. If you want me to suggest a class, I’d be more than happy to (Monday, 6:10pm, Guang-Fu campus, College of Management, 4th floor, room 62410). Internship opportunities – there are a few doing things in ChiMei and the likes during the summer break, but I’m not sure how that works exactly. I can get you in touch with the person in charge.

If you have more specific questions – let me know.

    Good luck.

    THT

    Marlyn:
Yuan Ze is a new private uni, but it features excellent teachers come to teach…like they invite National ChungChi university professors to lecture…it has very good reputation among TWN private uni..cuz it’s new, and it wants to build up its reputation, it takes a lot of efforts on it!!
Maybe u got more resources from Yuan Ze than NCKU, but when it comes to reputation,”National” uni is always better than “Private”.
Fianace: Best is NTU, 2nd is National Chengchi ..

I can tell u that when it comes to administration stuff…NCKU is not that strong… it has a good reputation as a whole.. its famous on 理工學院 not 管理學院…and actaully, 清大 n 交大are even better than 成大 in science dept..成大has better reputaion than 交大 due to many reasons, but actaully it’s harder to get into 交大!!And I totally agree w/ LW!

  25. Jean - Gravatar

    Jean  |  September 20th, 2008 at 11:41 pm #

I have to correct one thing that regular MBA program for full time Taiwanese students has good reputaion in Taiwan, one of the reason is Taiwanese stud are selected strictly.(I am not sure if foreingers can apply or not, also not sure if the program only lectured in Chinese) But NCKU still mainly features school of science and engineering. As for IMBA and EMBA,I think there are still room for them to progress, hvnt built up their reputation yet in Taiwan. But the professors in IMBA are more demanding from this semester. Still think school of science and engineering of 交大 and 清大 are harder to get in even though their global rankings are not good as NCKU.

  28. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  September 21st, 2008 at 7:21 pm #

Jean – those word of mouth methods are a bit tricky, since it’s all very subjective and any person can have a different idea based on personal experience. Trust me, I’ve discussed this plenty with everyone, and one of the reasons I ask for data is because I keep getting contradicting info.

  29. Jean - Gravatar

    Jean  |  September 21st, 2008 at 9:43 pm #

Ok! Then the simple way to follow is just to refer to global rankings! From Taiwanese angle, when companies in Taiwan recruite employees, they value a school’s reputation, which means 台政成清交 are the top priority. They don’t really care about which the department might be weak in NTU or NCKU. They think as long as you are from NTU, you will be good as a whole.
For example,Sun-Yet-Sen Uni is quite famous for its college of management, Sun-Yet-Sen features management school and puts more resources in Management school than NCKU does. If a Taiwanese stud wants to choose between NCKU and Sun-Yet-Sen uni to study management, most of them still choose NCKU, because NCKU’s reputation is better than Sun-Yet-Sen. But maybe some people who really care about the resources thing might choose Sun-Yet-Sen. So it’s really hard for me to answer this question.

  30. Jean - Gravatar

    Jean  |  September 21st, 2008 at 9:55 pm #

Also, they evaluate with different angles, and the ranking might be slightly change. Why NCKU’s ranking is better than 台政清交 among companies in TWN due to the fact that students are more down to earth, humble, can team work with.

And why NCKU global ranking is better than 清交 due to the thesis they issue.

Andree – haven’t heard anything about NTUST, I’m afraid, either than the fact it focuses on technology. NCKU, although facing some major challenges, has been running the IIMBA program for a while now with a fair number of international students.

I strongly recommend visiting both universitiy and talking to their faculty and students before making the decision. For more info on NCKU visit INCKU.

    Hi Fili,

After browsing several blogs and forums, I have a concern regarding tuition fees for IMBA in NCKU. There are some blogs stated that the tuition per credit for IMBA reaches NTD8000. It is indeed very expensive, Whereas in the NCKU OIA website the fees is only NT1600 per credit. Which one is true? Even though the fees are waived for the first year, it is just in case that I would not get the waiver for the second year. Thank you very much for your help…

    regards,
    andreewidjaja@yahoo.com

    Fili  |  January 4th, 2009 at 1:00 am #

andree – it’s 8000NT$ for Taiwanese students, 1600NT$ for international students with Taiwan scholarship (like me and selected others who receive 30000NT$ a month) and 0NT$ for international students with the NCKU scholarship (all the rest). BTW – Those and other questions regarding NCKU are best asked on the INCKU website.

I studied in Taiwan chinese and Master at the National Taiwan Normal University, to study chinese is the best in Taiwan, and The master program was all in english. My sister studies at the National Cheng Chi University, she had some problems because of some clases in chinese.
My strong recommendation is make sure the program you choose is in ENGLISH! some programs say they are in english but by the 2nd or 3rd year you have to take clases in chinese, and believe me to study a class all in chinese is very hard eventhough you spend one year studying chinese before begining university clases.

I know is not one of the topics.. but i think is very important.

Thanks Fili! How do you find the education system in Taiwan? My siblings were saying they’d prefer me to stay in Singapore but I really want to go over to Taiwan. What do you think?

  48. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  January 9th, 2009 at 11:37 pm #

Pamela – Taiwan’s global education is just starting out and facing many of the challenges Singapore was (and maybe still is) when it started its plan for the globalization of education 10-15 years ago. Singapore is also more of a multi-culture English-oriented society than Taiwan is, so naturally there are other barriers for Taiwan to overcome on that subject.

Some international students are very happy here, some are not. It is absolutely vital that you talk to as many students already here before making the decision.

  49. Pamela - Gravatar

    Pamela  |  January 10th, 2009 at 12:04 am #

How about you? Did you face any problems when you first started out in Taiwan? Was it tough to learn everything in Chinese? The only thing I’m afraid of would probably be the language.

Pamela – some of my thoughts are all over this blog in the NCKU and Taiwan’s Education categories. I suggest you quickly browse through those to get an idea.

My program is entirely in English, as many other programs in Taiwan are. I would strongly advise against studying in Chinese if you’re not proficient.

  51. JB - Gravatar

    JB  |  January 10th, 2009 at 12:52 am #

Pamela, as a former university lecturer in Taiwan (now in London), I would like to add my voice to Fili’s brilliant response (above).

While you are probably correct that you might face obstacles due to language, the Taiwanese educational system overall faces larger issues related to delayed efforts in promoting globalization in the education field that I think are of greater concern at the moment…

From my limited knowledge of unis in Singapore, on the other hand, it is my understanding that Singaporean unis tend to be more active in international research activities (e.g., conferences, journals, partnerships, etc.) and have a better understanding of the latest research from around the world. For this reason, I would cautiously promote Singaporean unis over Taiwanese in general, but Taiwanese unis might still have certain other advantages (e.g., will allow you to develop a network of contacts in Taiwan, focus on a subject that is not popular in Singapore, broaden your horizons by giving you a new, international perspective, etc.) that might still be of interest to you. Best of luck!!!

I wonder why NTNU is so low on those lists… must not put out a lot of research as a “teacher’s” university(the main criteria by which these “best college” lists are generally graded by).

Anyway, an American acquaintance of mine is only an Undergrad in the US, but takes Cheng Chi MBA courses for credit back home, and even then, he says the classes are very easy compared to his no-name US College. In this way, the Unis here are based off of Japanese systems, where the entrance exam is hard, but classes are nearly worthless.

In general, I’ve been looking at Universities here for a long time, if you are NOT studying in Chinese, you won’t get much benefit at Taiwanese Schools. Almost all their English programs are under a 10-years old, and have little international reputation.
As I’m wanting to do anthropological research here, I’m screwed unless I seriously study my Chinese, since even Cheng Chi’s “Taiwanese Culture” program has a serious lack of choices for classes in English.

If you want to study in English in a Chinese-speaking country, go to Singapore or Hong Kong, which have much higher-ranked universities and long-established English-taught classes and programs.
Even NTU is settling for second-best compared to Singapore or HK.

However, Taiwanese grad schools are much less competitive for foreign students, and the government scholarships are plenty.

Also it seems getting a reply from their dept. is a long wait.

NCTU and NTHU have the reputation of being very tech oriented, while NTU and NCKU are the leading comprehensive universities.

I can’t recommend an MBA program. You’d have to do your research on those, and decide what factors are important to you.

Being a faculty member of Southern Taiwan University, allow me to propose a quality alternative: English-taught programs of Southern Taiwan University. Southern Taiwan University(STUT) offers 3 english taught master’s programs in management, mechanical engineering and electrical engineering. Currently, almost all international graduate students are qualified for tuition waiver and NT$ 5000 monthly assistantship. Please see

    Hello,
I have been accepted for IMBA program of National Sun Yat-Sen University and National Cheng Kung University.I’ve heard that IMBA of NSYSU has a very good reputation. But NCKU is also a top university as well.Could you give me any suggestion or idea? Thank you so much.

  81. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  June 22nd, 2009 at 3:48 pm #

Rainnie – I don’t know the NSYSU program, but it does get good reviews and ranks pretty well (QS Global MBA). It’s also AACSB accredited, when NCKU isn’t, and it’s located in Kaohsiung – a bigger more expat friendly city. At first glance, NSYSU seems like a better option, but I strongly recommend talking to students there and visiting the university before making the decision.

Good luck, please give us an update when you make the decision.

chu chun, I think there are plenty of scholarships available to Taiwanese citizens. Check one by one the university sites for that. Hi my name is Tristan and I really appreciate all of your detailed
comparison and analysis of all the top MBA programs in Taiwan. I got accepted to both NTU’s GMBA & NCCU’s IMBA 2009 programs and I can’t decide which program I should attend. Since NCCU’s IMBA program is already in it’s 9th year and it’s AACSB accredited, many people say it’s a better and stronger program than NTU’s GMBA program. NTU’s GMBA program it’s fairly new and it’s only in it’s 4th year, but many people also tell me that I should go to NTU because NTU’s name is much better than NCCU internationally and it will benefit me more in the future~ Can you please help give me your opinion on which program I should attend.
Thank you very very much for your help~

  88. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  July 13th, 2009 at 9:52 am #

Tristan – I think the best thing for you to do is to head over there, spend some time walking around campus, sitting in summer classes and talking to the professor and dean – and then decide. My personal impression, not thinking much of AACSB, is that NTU would be the better option and that general academic rankings (top 100 in the world for NTU) and reputation in Taiwan (number 1, no doubt about it) is far more important than accreditation or how many years it’s been running. From the little I’ve heard, NTU seem to be more professional and international oriented (international events, conferences and scholarship) than NCCU. I vote NTU.

Let me know what you decided.

  89. Tristan - Gravatar

    Tristan  |  July 16th, 2009 at 6:26 am #

Hi Fili, thank you so much for your input and recommendation. You are right that NTU being the #1 school in Taiwan is far more important than accreditation or how many years it’s been running. I will definitely take your advise into consideration, I will let you know when I finalize my decision around end of August. Thanks again!

  96. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  December 1st, 2009 at 10:29 am #

That's going to be tough, for both law and fine arts. If that's what you're looking for, and you insist on Asia, I strongly recommend checking out either Hong Kong or Singapore that have an English based education system.
With that said – doctorates are more personal, so you might be able to pull that off with law at, say, NTU. As for fine arts, I'm not very familiar with those.
I posted your query on Taiwanderful, perhaps some else would be able to help :

    Hi Fili,

I'd like to know about the student composition for International MBA Program in some universities in Taiwan.
As far as I'm concerned, I would like to be in a class, which has at least 20% of Taiwanese. This is quite important for me, since you're going to study in Taiwan.

I'll take NCKU as an example.
    http://www.imba.ncku.edu.tw/aboutus/studentcomp...
From this page, it's showing that there is no Taiwanese student in one class.

Can you enlighten me about this thing?

  99. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  January 27th, 2010 at 2:01 am #

Alex – most of those programs have atleast 20% Taiwanese. The composition you're looking at are for the “international students”, leaving locals out, as they're taken for granted. In general, those programs were created to attract more Taiwanese to be in a more international surroundings, and the logic is clear once you realize that international students simply don't pay for most of those programs (like NCKU) while Taiwanese sometimes pay 4 times more the regular local program.

If you're looking for an MBA degree in Taiwan, I think the best option for you would be the Global MBA in National Taiwan University. My experience with the IIMBA in NCKU hasn't been all honey.

    Alex  |  January 27th, 2010 at 2:17 am #

    Wow!
I really didn't expect that you would give a quick reply.
Thanks a lot for a quick reply!

I think, I've found the right person to discuss about the International MBA Program in Asia. :)

So what you're saying is, if I want to find such a student composition, NTU would be the best for me? (Is there any other Univ that you can recommend for me? )

Oh yeah. I just remembered one thing that I've been wanting to ask.
How about the job opportunity after graduate from one of those IMBA Program?

    Thanks!

  101. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  January 27th, 2010 at 6:50 am #

What I'm saying is… if you want a quality MBA program in Taiwan, I'd suggest NTU. Other programs I'm much less confident about. Some consider NCCU and NCKU as the second best options, but I'd recommend sticking with NTU, unless you've talked to someone in those programs that told you everything about what's happening and you feel confident that is reasonable for you.

I wouldn't count on Job opportunities afterwards, unless you're able to develop atleast intermediate level Chinese. Those programs rarely have good connections with the industry and since they're all very new and somewhat undeveloped, they usually do not enjoy the school reputation with recruiters. Once again, NTU might be the exception to the general rule.

  102. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  January 27th, 2010 at 6:51 am #

Chuxxx – I honestly don't think such a program exists. Hong Kong would be a much better bet for this type of thing. HKUST collaborates with Kellogg and HKU with the London Business school, so what you're asking for might possible for an MBA.

  103. JF_Amadei - Gravatar

    JF_Amadei  |  January 27th, 2010 at 7:22 am #

I'm a little bit surprised by two things here

    1) That you take webometrics and “Jiatong” (a ranking that even the chinese themselves don't use) as a ranking (what about Times Ranking ?)

    2) That you rank the university as a whole and not the program itself. Indeed, A University can be high ranked and have very “basic” MBA, as an example HKU is the best university in asia but its MBA it's practically unknown, the opposite is also true. Moreover, it's not very fair to compare university with a medical department and those without.

Other point, no one talked about NCCU. Yet, it's the only one “Business Department” (it already makes more sense when you want to do an MBA) with NSYSU's to be ranked in the Financial Time ranking.

Perso I'm graduated from NCCU's IMBA, I quite enjoyed being a student there. I learnt a lot, met business parter and also lots of good friends.

<quote>”I should go to NTU because NTU’s name is much better than NCCU internationally”</quote>

When you get out of Greater China, no one has ever heard about NTU or NCCU so if you are looking for fame you'd better go somewhere else. Also, NCCU has always been an “elite” university on the mainland (established in Nanjing) as well as in Taiwan, thus it remain quite famous over here and especially over there.

To finish, don't expect that a “name” or a “degree” will give you more or less chances, especially at this point. Is all about YOU and your WORK and how you manage to “sell” yourself, nothing else.

  104. Fili - Gravatar

    Fili  |  January 27th, 2010 at 7:47 am #

Amadai – this is a very old post. There are other post on Asian universities that are more comprehensive (http://www.filination.com/blog/2009/05/12/top-a... , showing you that the HKU MBA program and business school is ranked very high in several rankings and enjoys very high reputation), but to answer some of the points you're making. Webrankings has no real meaning, but Jiaotung is an important indicator of research quality and international prestige.
The fact that NTU is consistently doing very well in world rankings -does- matter, especially internationally. When there is no other information, rankings and reputation matters and NTU is no doubt the most well-known university in Taiwan and highly respected. People outside of Taiwan and Asia do know NTU, but not much about any of the others.
What you're stating about NCCU sounds somewhat biased. The historical story of KMT copying some universities (Tsing Hua, Jiao Tung) to Taiwan does not imply similarity or linkage, and while Taiwanese universities are respected in mainland, I would caution against what you're saying about NCCU.

Name and degree matter to some extent, but no less important is the quality of education offered and the standards set by the school. There is little disagreement in Taiwan as to NTU being the dominant number 1 in all of those factors.

With all that said – you can't rule out all the other universities.

Hi, i'm interested in studying Tourism Management @ either I-Shou in Dashu Township, Kaohisung County OR @ Ming Chuan located in Tapei or Providence located in Taichung. I'm having a hard time choosing between them and i live in St Lucia so visiting the campuses is not an option. I really like how detailed I-Shou and Providence Curriculum is but Ming Chuan teaches in English so i'm really confused as to which one to choose and the websites provide very limited information. Can you tell me about the location the schools are in and their reputations please, PLEAASSEEEEEEE. Or should i choose I-SHou since its ranked about the other 2.

If anyone reading the comment goes to any of the 3 schools can you tell me a bit about it or anyone studying tourism management in Taiwan i'd love to know more about the course and which school you study at.

    Hi!

I applied to both NCCU and NTUST for an IMBA program, got into both, and now I am confused as to which I should accept.

I am weighing the pros and cons for both universities as I have other factors to consider aside from the course/program itself. I see that NTUST is much cheaper, as compared with NCCU and it offers free Mandarin Classes. Also, the location is much accessible for me. However, NCCU has a better opportunity for exchange, as well as a good alumni network.

Hope you can tell me your insights and info should you have any regarding these two schools. Thanks!
