Where will you be spending your Chinese new year? Hopefully, you get a chance to actually have Chinese new years in China/Taiwan.

Me? Being still very far away from Asia, I found out I have 3 options, which all sound great:

  1. The Chinese loving Israelis from the "China culture and language" are meeting up. Details here.
  2. The Chinese embassy is holding a formal Chinese new year celebration at the Chinese embassy.
  3. The Tiawanese are having a get-together on Chinese new year for the Taiwanese staying in Israel.

Donno, a tough one. I will probably head to meet the other Israelis, and maybe drop by either the Taiwan/China office/embassy on the way there. Anybody want to join me?

hey, I’d love to join you. But do u mean to say, anyone can go to the formal party at the Chinese embassy? Also, it’s the new year for not only the Chinese, but Koreans and many other lunar calendar using nations! ;)

Yeah, I’m aware of that. I think in Vietnam they call it TET. Is there any party for Koreans?

As for the formal party, you’re forgetting you’re dealing with Israelis. Since when do Israelis wait for invitations to go anywhere ? ;)

My heart is in the Far East, but I am in the W . . . uh, the Middle East…

The Chinese embassy formal party requires invitations. I actually had one but gave it away. I want to shoot myself in the foot for this.
The Israeli option, from looking at it, seems like a tiny clique, I’ll probably feel like an outsider. The Taiwanese option, well. Is that at all accessible? I’ll probably just stay at home.

BTW, the Vietnamese do have their Tet (Tết) on the same day. Hanoi during the preparations for the Têt is one of the more exciting experiences in had on the right side of the world.
PS/BTW2: You are not so far from Asia as you put it. you *are* in Asia.

Nah, I don’t know anybody there either, but I’m going. You should come… have a beer with me.
As for the Taiwanese option, probably better if you come with someone you know.

In Asia, eh? it all depends on the perspective. I think that most Israelis (and maybe non-Israelis) would say Middle East, or even Europe :)

It’s technically SouthWest Asia, really, although North Africa is also included in the term ‘Middle East’. Look, even the term is calling for a conflict! ;)

    Heh. Yep…

It would be interesting to know how Asians (and Middle-Easterns) view Israel’s location.

I’ve seen both references to 中东 (Middle East) and to 西亚 (West Asia), but the former is much more common.

yeah, in Corea, we call it 중동(中东) too. In any case, this is definitely a matter of perspective, as in Asia, you will find lots of maps where Asia is centred. ;)

Some friends and I are Chinese and we would like to go to the embassy party – could you tell us the details? you can call me at 052-604-2717. Thank you!

I’m afraid I don’t really know. Sorry. I’ve only heard about it through my Chinese friends, who are now on their way to spend Chinese New Years in Cairo, Egypt. I think the best thing to do would be to call the Chinese embassy, provided they’re open. I’ve also heard it’s invite only, so either way – you will need to talk to some official in that office.
Hopefully, other readers here will know…

From what I know, Chinese Nationals don’t need an invitation. The party will take place at the ambassador’s residence in Herzliya Pituach Friday at noon. I’ll try to get more details and call you back.

I think I’m also going to the party. I’ll send Mei11 an e-mail
