Which are the top universities in China? I've been looking into the Chinese university rankings recently, trying to figure out how the universities in China rank internally. Since I already saved the comparison charts, might as well share those with you.

Seems as though there's one main website that does the Chinese universities rankings every year since 1999 called Netbig .

Rankings for the Chinese universities by reputation :

Rankings by Freshmen "quality" :

  1. Tsinghua University.
  2. Beijing University.
  3. Foreign Affairs college.
  4. China Science and Technology University.
  5. Chinese People's University.
  6. Fudan University.
  7. Beijing Normal University.
  8. Nanjing

I wasn't able to find any other detailed rankings, but there's the 21st Century Business Herald's 2005 report on all the newspapers :

  1. Tsinghua University.
  2. Beijing University.
  3. Fudan University
  4. Nanjing
  5. Huazhong University of Science and Technology
  6. Shanghai Jiaotong University.
  7. Wuhan University
  8. Jilin University and Zhongshan University.

Do you know any other rankings? Do you happen to have an opinion from personal experience about universities in China?

Peking University is the best Chinese University!
  • Peking University is also ranked highly in the world university rankings. It is ranked second to Tsinghua University in THES World Rankings 2009.
  • Seg - what is the Chinese opinion on this?

Really diferent from Chineses own idea.I'm a student from China.
  • Relative
Tsinghua is generally perceived as the #1 school by most Chinese people, though Beijing University (BeiDa) is mostly seen as an equal peer with different strengths where it also can rank in first place.

Beijing U is widely seen as the top Arts/Humanities college and Tsinghua the top Science and Engineering school. This is the reason they are often compared to Harvard and MIT respectively. It is misguided however to think this Means Beijing U is like Harvard in Status; Tsinghua is generally perceived as #1.

A better comparison might be Beijing U = Yale and Tsinghua = MIT, in a nation with no perfectly clear #1.
  • No, as I understand it Beijing U gets automatic no. 1 status; kind of like Harvard gets that status in the US public's eyes even though some prominent publications often rank Stanford and Princeton higher.
  • I have a comment about the "brand name" mentality in China and all over Asia. It will be assumed over here that the worst student at the No.1 university is a little bit better than the best student at the No.2 university, the worst student at the No.2 university is a little bit better than the best student at the no.3 university, and so on...
  • I see.

And those brand names that you know of correspond to the rankings as they show up here? Is Tsinghua really considered number 1 and so on?
