If you could research anything that's related to Asian culture – China, Taiwan, Chinese culture or expat life in Asia, what would it be about? What are you interested in?

In the past few months I've been contemplating about a research subject. The main theme for such research combines subjects that I've been involved with academically and professionally – being related to organizational behavior, business and information technology – with subjects that I'm passionate about – being mainly related to Asian cultures. I believe I must have had dozens of chitchats with various people discussing with them their views and observations. Most discussions were fascinating and could have served an interesting essay or an academic paper, if only for their compound anthropological  debate.

As an example – I found that the whole idea of how people and culture perceive each other surprised me.
Living in Asia it was mainly about the contrast between how the western foreigners perceived the Asian locals against what the locals thought about the foreigners. I tried to understand a little of both views, although the fact that I was a westerner has probably made it impossible to fully understand the locals. It was only after a while that I began to realize that it wasn't that straightforward and that the interaction isn't about two groups, since – obviously – foreigners can be separated into sub-country-groups which have different views and relate to each other in complicated interactions and as for the locals – they have their own complexities of sub-cultures and politics.
Moving into a different location in the UK has given me a whole new perspective on that, as I spent some time with Asians trying to make their way in a western society.

I'm curious about what people reading a blog like mine are interested in. You know what? Let have ourselves a little blogging experiment. Not knowing who visits this blog I can't really say that I know who you  are, but I'm going to make a first attempt in directly asking you for your thoughts :

If you have any research subject idea or a research question regarding Asian culture you've been wondering about, either general or specific, wide or narrow, big or small, funny or serious, anything, as insignificant as it may be – then I would be extremely grateful if you'll share that thought with me by posting a comment to this post. One short comment is all I ask for. If you'd rather not post a comment then you're also welcome to email me at the following address : filination |-at-| gmail.com (replace the |-at-| with @).

I promise to post a list of those in an upcoming post with some of my notes.

  • Having just retired after teaching cultures for the past 12 years to high school freshmen in California, you might want to take a look at the time element in Chinese culture. Tradition vs contemporary comes into conflict. Being half Chinese and half European, I've experienced this conflict. I was born on May 8th .... good, right?
  • Two questions for you:

    1) What is with the obsession with luck and gambling? Chinese are so pragmatic in some things, and in others, inexplicably obsessed with superstition. As a Chinese diaspora myself, I find it maddening sometimes that Chinese who are educated and intelligent still find themselves caught up in what I find extremely primitive behaviour.

    2) What is it about "Chinese" culture which makes it acceptable to allow intellectual property theft writ large? There's something practically indiginous about the shameless copying and knock off goods that you just don't see in the same scale and care in other cultures -- and its clearly acceptable. The maddening thing here? That it is utterly shameless. For a culture which is often preoccupied with Confuscian notions of "face" isn't anyone concerned with how other cultures view this aspect of China?

Two things that I've grappled with myself. Wondering what your own thoughts were -- or if there is existing work in these areas.

    Thanks very much
    Tony.
  • For a moment there, it sounded to me that you were writing about Israeli culture... :D

This -is- actually very interesting and I've heard a few lectures and read a few articles that are kind'o related to that. I'll comment on that in an upcoming post.

Thanks for your sharing your thoughts.
  • I am also thinking about enrolling in a post-graduate course here in Taiwan. I haven't really discussed it seriously with anyone yet.

The field I am interested in is environmental planning and more specifically the use of urban space and transport issues.
  • Oh, nice. Do you have a theory or an idea for a research question?
  • fiLi, I have no shortage of questions. I think the use of urban space in Taiwan is quite fascinating. You could look at it from a number of angles: public policy, social psychology or economics. It would also be interesting to look at transport planning with regard to social psychology.

I haven't really discussed any of these ideas in detail with anyone yet, so that is why I am a little vague on exactly what I want to do.
