Edinburgh Fringe

I just came back from a fantastic weekend up at Edinburgh-Scotland, spending 3 days touring around Edinburgh and getting some of the great Fringe Festival atmosphere.

The Fringe Festival

The Edinburgh Fringe (or just The Fringe) is the world’s largest arts festival. It takes place in Scotland's capital during three weeks every August.

The Fringe mostly attracts events from the performing arts, particularly drama and (the big growth area in recent years) comedy, although dance and music also figure significantly. Theatre events can range from the classics of ancient Greece, Shakespeare and Samuel Beckett, through to new works. However, there is no selection committee to approve the entries, so any type of event is possible: the Fringe is well-known as a showcase for experimental works which might not be admitted to a more formal festival.

Edinburgh's streets are full of live shows and music and there's enough to do and see even if you don't buy any tickets. To share with you a little of the atmosphere on the streets, here are a few short videos we took (quality's bad, photography even worse, but… ) :

(Small note – The Chinese are playing one of the HUJI Chinese language students' favorites – "yue4liang4 dai4biao3 wo3 de xin1"

The Fringe shows that we've seen:

• The pearl (fiLi rank – 5 stars)

• Passion (fiLi rank – 4)

• The Same… But Different (fiLi rank – 3)
• Cabin Fever (fiLi rank – 2)

Some good shows, some bad, most were in very small theaters with unknown actors who are just starting off. I guess that's the true spirit of the festival, and I really liked it.
