I’m on the high-way, I’m in my car. The rhythm of the engine pounding beneath me, sound of the wind blowing in my ears, the wheels are in my hands, and I’m dead tired. Out of no where - I hear a loud noise and I suddenly realize the horrible truth that I fell asleep in my car, so I try and pull myself together madly, pushing the breaks, raising my hand-break, trying to understand what’s going on, but I have this intense feeling that it’s over – there’s no way I’m going to pull out of this situation. I’m going to die.
My heart still beating fast, my body aching, I shake my head wildly, not really recognizing where I am. The sound that scared me off is still out there, so I look at the car window to the left and see a police officer knocking on the window. I’m confused. I check my body to see that everything is okay, I look around me and see that I’m at full stop, I’m still not sure what happened.
I open the window, scared to death, feeling like I just came back from the heavens, probably looking like I’m on drugs and the police officer says – “Sir, I’m sorry I woke you up, I didn’t mean to scare you. Are you okay now?”. What is going on? … and then it all came back to me.
I was dead tired on the road from TelAviv to Jerusalem after a long day, and I realize that if I would keep driving like that I might not make it to Jerusalem, so I pulled off to a side road, left my lights blinking and fell asleep while the engine was running with the A/C on. I probably forgot that I wasn’t driving anymore, so when the police officer knocked on my window, from within my dream - I was sure it was me falling asleep on the wheels and hitting something, which was my absolute worse nightmare. I can’t imagine how weird it must have been for the officer to see me go wild in my car, hitting the brakes and starting to pull the hand-brake up and down.
“Sir, this is not a good area for you to take a nap in, I suggest that you drive 2 minutes more to the gas station and park there. There is talk about people in this area that you would rather avoid…”.
“Ahh?!… oh, whatever, officer. Thanks”
