Merry Christmas and Happy Hanukkah

.

I could never understand Christmas. Ever since my time at the states in 6th grade, I couldn’t get this weird holiday. How is a myth of an old man flying around - going down people’s chimneys - giving away gifts in a bright red CocaCola clothing - got anything to do with Jesus Christ? Why are the Christmas songs so annoying and childish? Especially going around Taipei and seeing shopkeepers with Santa hats and the stupidest Chinese adaptations of Christmas songs seems to be surreal. While I’m at it - Christian Asians celebrating western Christmas rituals? why?

I could never understand Hanukkah. Ever since my first candle lighting, I couldn’t get this weird holiday. I found the story of self destructing short Jewish rule of Israel fascinating (one family resisting a foreign empire only to later fight amongst themselves and ask for the foreign rule to come back) and appreciated the holiday off school, but couldn’t quite get the candle-dradle things and the weird songs in traditional indecipherable Hebrew. Yet, you got to respect a good reason for gambling and eating extremely fat oily food.

Yeah, I know. I like those holidays too, and I like the so called ’spirit’. I would endure what ever is needed with the annoying holiday rituals to get a small glance at people smiling to each other kindly and see families meeting together. Making some long needed phonecalls, reading a bunch’o email greeting cards, that could never hurt, can it? and if you can also get a chance to discuss your beliefs and maybe make a little fun of religion, then that’s just perfect, isn’t it?
